Howdy! Welcome to the USF Counseling Center!
My name is Jacob Schlierf (please call me Jake!) and I am a Postdoctoral Fellow at the USF Counseling Center. I earned my B.S. in psychology from the University of Florida and I am a diehard Gator fan, although I have made ample room in my heart for the Bulls. While I was at UF I developed an interest in sport psychology and went on to earn my M.S. in Sport and Exercise Sciences from Ithaca College. I enjoyed working with student-athletes in both performance enhancement and athletic counseling modalities. I earned my Psy.D. in Counseling Psychology with a concentration in Athletic Counseling from Springfield College. During the course of my doctoral program I worked in both community mental health settings and college counseling centers. I have developed a strong passion for working with college students as they encounter the many challenges of college life, and this was solidified even further this past year as I completed my doctoral internship at the USF Counseling Center. I am delighted to be staying another year here and to be working with such diverse and energetic students.
I am originally from Cocoa Beach, FL so I am very happy to be back in my home state! I grew up close to the beach and have enjoyed surfing and fishing since I was a youth. I really enjoy any activity where I get to be surrounded by nature and I’m often out hiking, biking, or swimming when the waves are flat. My approach to therapy is fairly integrative. I focus on creating a quality relationship with students while at the same time collaboratively engaging in a solution focused manner to address their concerns. I approach the therapeutic relationship with the understanding that the student in front of me is an expert on themselves and their unique socio-cultural experiences. I see therapy as the fusion of their self-expertise and my knowledge/experience as we collaboratively work toward improving their identified concerns. My background in sport psychology includes a focus on strengths. I enjoy setting goals together with students that allow them to use their strengths and challenge themselves outside of therapy. I find this outside work enriches the work we do together in session. I am thrilled to accompany you on your journey through college and support your growth.
Clinical Interests: My interests include anxiety, depression, developmental trauma, exercise and wellness, grief & loss, PTSD, interpersonal relationships, romantic relationships, sleep difficulties, physical injury, sport performance.
